Kim Cofino (Courses 1 – 5)
Originally from the US, Kim is an enthusiastic and innovative globally-minded educator. Kim has been teaching internationally for over 10 years, first in Munich, Germany, then in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, next at the International School Bangkok in Thailand, and currently at Yokohama International School in Japan.
An Apple Distinguished Educator, her work focuses on helping core subject teachers authentically embed current and emerging technologies in the classroom to create a global and collaborative learning environment. Her inquiry-based, constructivist approach to teaching utilizes project-based learning experiences developed using the Understanding by Design process combined with the MYP Technology Design Cycle.
Kim regularly consults with other international schools interested in implementing 21st century learning, has been profiled on a number of educational websites and journals, is a member of the K12 Horizon Report Advisory Board 2008 – present, and is a regular presenter and keynote speaker at conferences and professional development sessions throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States. Adam Clark (Course 1)
I am on faculty at the Yokohama International School in Yokohama, Japan and work as a school counselor to provide responsive services and guidance oriented curriculum for middle and high school students (grade 6-10). This age range is fascinating as it spans the distance between childhood through all of early and mid-adolescence. I also just enjoy students in middle school and high school so work is full of laughter most days. In addition to school counseling, I teach Theory of Knowledge (T.O.K.) as part of the I.B. Diploma Programme for grades 11-12. As an introduction to issues of epistemology this course is a unique opportunity for students to embrace an intellectual existence and to think with insight and creativity. This course also allows me to draw upon both my background in ethics and psychology along with a love of technological interconnection to foster learning. Brian Farrell (Course 2, former Instructor)
I originally hail from just north of Toronto, Canada, but currently work as head librarian and coordinator of online courses at Yokohama International School in Japan. Previously, I’ve taught history, geography, careers and civics in Canadian public schools, worked online as a research tutor for high school students, developed experiential and hands-on outdoor education, authored district-wide curriculum, and managed training systems as a member of the Canadian Forces. I’ve researched and presented on technology in education, libraries, social studies education, social justice issues, and the interactions between online and physical learning spaces.
As part of the University of British Columbia’s Master of Educational Technology program, I conducted inquiry into online learning spaces and their impact on student performance in traditional classroom environments. An example of just such a transition, I created and now moderate sakuramedal.com, a book review and discussion blog that helps students engage in reading by connecting with authors and peers in Japan and around the world.
Frank Curkovic (Course 3)
Since 2000, I have been working at an international school here in Japan. Currently I am teaching Grades 6-11 Art. I have also taught Kindergarten, Grade 3, Grade 4 Math, been the ICT Facilitator for grades K-5 and have taught Grades 1-3 Drama. I have taught in Australia, England and South Korea

Rebekah Madrid (Course 2 & 4)
I currently live in Japan, where I teach grades 6-9 humanities and history at Yokohama International School. I started teaching through the Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE) program, a teaching-service program that places new teachers in high-needs schools. Through ACE, I taught geography at St. Joseph Academy in Brownsville, Texas and earned my M.Ed from the University of Notre Dame. I then moved to R.E. Lee High School in Fairfax County, Virginia outside of Washington DC. Some of my roles at Lee High School included teaching IBDP History, IBDP Theory of Knowledge, and acting as IB CAS Coordinator. I was also nominated as Teacher of the Year for the Fairfax Country Public School system and earned my National Board Certification.
After five years in Virginia, I felt it was time to move again, this time into International Schools. In 2008 I started at Munich International School. At MIS, I taught MYP geography, MYP/DP history, and Theory of Knowledge. This was also my first experience teaching in a 1:1 classroom environment and I loved how technology affected my teaching and my students’ learning. I was named an Apple Distinguished Educator in 2010. Also in 2010, I started at Yokohama International School, where I help develop the new MYP humanities curriculum. I’m passionate about finding new ways to teach skills and content in a 21st Century world and I think we are lucky as educators to be part of this transformational change in schools.
