What we wanted…
It’s my preference to eat hamburgers in the dusk of evening. A subtle attempt to hide excessive cheese and condiments dribbling down my chin. We’re not talking about pithy Mickey D decade enduring non-organic constituted burger things here. No, rather the home-style, juice squelching behemoths one finds in local backyard BBQ’s. Once, brilliantly, someone used the hamburger metaphorically in comparison to the essential components of an expository essay. Each part of the burger provided visual reference to a part of the five paragraph expository essay. With ERB tests looming on the horizon we, myself and teaching partner, want to make one last ditch effort of fusing the expository structure firmly in the minds of our beloved students.
What we did…
In discussion groups students will be required to ascertain an image, whose structure could be representative of an expository essay. Students will then need to determine the actual representing details, create the image and tag it with the corresponding parts of the expository essay. We’re figuring, though, that will eliminate the possibility of students using the now infamous burger, nor will they be able to use the banana split that we will use as a demonstration. Students could use the image of an umbrella, ice cream sundae, sushi, anything that could be creatively linked to an expository essay structure. To culminate, a banana split celebration is planned for the day preceding the WRAP’er. We’ll let you know how it turns out.
