Makes me smile to think of all of the things that one wants to get done in a summer and those which actually do. It sounds like a pretty good list. Watching you spend so much time and effort with your significant successes here, I wouldn't worry about being "student centered". You have a system that does work really well. I guess I like your goals as they seem realistic and interesting. Try a lesson using a different style, Experiment with different homework methods. I don't know the answer to that one either. I try to ask my students to try all of the homework and not punish them for not getting wrong answers but many of then then try a little and then stop. Dunno. Good luck this summer. Nice blog.

I really liked the way students took an initiative and devised a way of remembering the essential formulas in fun way. Since they devised this strategy of learning themselves, this practice is going to go with them long way and will be reflected in other subject areas too.

Where were these ideas when I was in school? Seriously...I don't remember too many times during my elem/middle/high school years where I was motivated to go beyond anything that was taught in the classroom. Interesting post, Nyoli...and I am sure your students are benefiting from your increased knowledge of tech!

Thanks Adrian. Before posting the videos I asked students for their permission to use their work. Though everyone gave it, I loved the response that said:

We don't mind!! At least I don't at the moment!!
That would be awesome!

It was great to see a student taking pride in his work and being excited to share it. Now if only they could be that excited about the mundane.

Funny videos. They will never forget the quadratic formula now. A creative way to teach something pretty mundane but essential in math. Looks like the students enjoyed the project. Good Job!

Go for it! And don't forget that students will need lots of explanation about the shift. Even though they routinely deal with uncertainty outside of school (think of a new video game), in school they expect to be able to sit back and not have to do any real problem solving. So be sure to let them know in advance that this time it's different.

best of luck,
Peter

How brave to try this activity in two different ways...and yet now you have an even clearer idea of how you would do the activity again. A wise move on your part. I continue to be in awe of the incredible math teachers that surround me, it was most often not my experience to have creative math instruction when I went to school. Looking forward to continuing to conquer corel with you next year!!!
