I&#039;m hoping to do something similar with my IB Eco class as part of my course 5 Coetail @YIS course. I&#039;m curious - did you give the students any more detailed assessment criteria than on the project info sheet on your blog? Is there somewhere I could access the final iBook? I&#039;d love to see what your students came up with.</description>

Thanks for the suggestions in this blog. Next year, as SFHS rolls out the 1:1 Laptop Initiative, I&#039;m trying to find as many best practices as I can, from those who&#039;ve actually tried them. In reading your &quot;start of class&quot; section, I got the idea that I would really like to start and end my class with no computers- just a 10/15 minute set where we actually &quot;come back to reality&quot;- what did our peers think, learn, experience and how does this apply in the face to face world? So, thank-you for that idea!
Secondly, I&#039;m struck how much self-discipline is going to be a 21st Century skill; not just for students by everyone. It used to be that the natural processes of life kept you more focused simply because you didn&#039;t have access to multiple things at one time- your car didn&#039;t have wifi, play videos, or ask you to input GPS coordinates as you drove. Now, we are finding that people are going to have to learn to discipline themselves NOT to do these things because it&#039;s a matter of life or death (http://www.fcc.gov/guides/texting-while-driving).</description>

I would love to get a legal opinion on the photocopying of textbooks.  The reason I say this is that we are a tablet school with a 1:1 program.  When we started we had a lot of paper copies of textbooks.  We got a legal opinion and were told that as long as we the same number (or more) of paper copies as students in “the back room”, then we could scan and give each student a digital copy.  We had paid for x copies of the text and so could use this number of copies via digital media.

My thought is that this probably applies to photocopying texts as well.  If you have 25 books in “the back room”, you can probably photocopy one 25 times, and give I copy to each kid, so each kids can write / annotate theirs.  You have not exceeded the number of simultaneous uses that you have paid for.  We always re-issue texts each year, so as long as we are not teaching with the previous year’s copies, we can probably do the same thing each year.

I would love to get a legal opinion to see how correct this train of thought is, but am certain we will never get it from the publishing companies.</description>
