Jen: As I have mentioned before but feel compelled to mention once again, I have been repeatedly impressed, inspired, and humbled by the extent to which you have integrated technology in your classroom and […]

Finally, an IT innovation that speaks to our stomachs and general well-being instead of the more cerebral pursuits of the classroom! This really is a “flipping fantastic” idea – an invention to put the spotlight […]

rowek commented on the post, Policing Laptops, on the site Out of the box with Mr. Fox 1 year ago
It is a great relief to be several years into a 1-to-1 laptop program so that we have mostly moved on from issues of daily management and are tackling much more existential questions about the nature of our […]

rowek commented on the post, Getting Students to Think and Understand Mathematically, on the site Integrating Tech within the Math Classroom 1 year ago
What a massive shift in teaching pedagogy you were able to realize in your classroom with this guided DIY approach. It seems so obvious and really quite straightforward when you describe in this blog how, step by […]

I deeply sympathize with your tantrum-throwing, hair-ripping personal experiences with screen-capturing software. I also admire your persistence – you churned out not just one, not just two, not even just three of […]

rowek wrote a new blog post: Throwing it out there 1 year, 7 months ago
The two of us – Chris Fox and Kristin Rowe , Team History in Grade 8 with “Ancient Civilizations” – have enjoyed the early days of our new course. We have had lots of space to dream, and we’ve been throwing around big ideas and grand visions regarding flipped classrooms, reverse instruction, the mastery learning approach, vodcasting, and…[Read more] -
rowek wrote a new blog post: Beyond Management of the Machine 1 year, 7 months ago
Management of the 1:1 lap top situation in my classroom is not a big deal for me anymore, I’m relieved to say. Don’t get me wrong – it is certainly on my mind. All the time, in fact! I do have to plan out my lessons, thinking in terms of grouping together the computer work, so [...] -

Okay, so I stole that line from a New York Times article by Steve Lohr that caught my attention recently with this title: ” In Case You Wondered, a Real Human Wrote This Column .” But plagiarism as the dirtiest deed in academia took on a whole new dimension as I read the following lead: “WISCONSIN appears to be in [...] -

I am both challenged and inspired by the principles of Mastery Learning and the Flipped Classroom. As the COETAIL cohort video-conference d (via Google Hangout – move over, Skype!) with Brian Bennett on this topic, I couldn’t help but be impressed by his incredible personal journey and his insight. Here is a very young teacher who speaks like…[Read more]

rowek wrote a new blog post: The Power of Partnering for better IT/IL Skill-building 1 year, 7 months ago
In an integrated model of technology education, a great deal of responsibility seems to fall on the Technology Coordinator and the Librarian to ensure that IT/IL goals (be they ISTE NETs or AASL Standards or a school’s own home-grown measurements of learning) are met for each child in each classroom at each grade level. This really means, that [...] -
rowek wrote a new blog post: Stand and Deliver! Promises I have to keep regarding my new History course 1 year, 7 months ago

History is as essential to human society as memory is to an individual. It provides a framework within which we can explore and debate complex issues such as identity, morality, and reality. Examining the historical precursors to the modern world also provides a reference point for speculating about what is possible in the future. History is [...]

rowek commented on the blog post The Power of Visual Teaching 2 years ago
What a neat complement to COETAIL work this EARCOS PD opp turned out to be for you! The power of visual literacy in teaching is very clear. Engagement level increases exponentially the minute a graphic is added. But I also liked David McCandless’s comment in the TEDTalk linked to your blog, that graphics are a [...]

rowek commented on the blog post Qwiki – Final Project Reflection 2 years ago
Qwiki is a great find. I hope it catches on so that it can be developed beyond this initial release and some of the disadvantages that you listed can be solved, such as the robotic audio reading (although I am amused by the effort already invested in attempt to vary the inflections of the “storyteller”). [...]

rowek commented on the blog post Metaphorically Looking… representation of expository structure 2 years ago
Great minds…! Great to see you are prompting deeper exploration of familiar concepts through analogical reasoning. It is such a powerful form of thinking and communicating – related to problem solving, creativity, perception, memory, etc. And, for all that, it is so simple to use in the classroom: quality vs quantity!

rowek commented on the blog post Teaching the 3 Branches of Government through Visuals 2 years ago
I am hoping that with a more-or-less blank slate for our new Social Studies curriculum next year, that we remember to make plenty of opportunities for students to use Inspiration Concept Webs. This software is such a powerful thinking tool to get that loop going of processing, clarifying, revising, self-assessing, etc. And it is such [...]

rowek wrote a new blog post: Three Branches of Government – Many Ways of Looking at It 2 years ago
Visual aids have perhaps never been so important to my teaching of Social Studies concepts as when I taught about US Government this past month. In preparing and teaching this unit (Course 3 project) with my teaching partners, Chris and Erik, we rummaged into all the nooks and crannies of our visual literacy toolkit to pull out the following [...] -
rowek wrote a new blog post: New Technology > New Teaching Tools > New Teaching Partnerships 2 years ago
This Groen Brothers commercial spoof of a cellphone with multiple fanciful functions is a good laugh. But it’s also a sobering reminder that the things we laugh about now will be the ordinary, everyday, un-eyebrow-raising facts of our students’ future. Our kids have been born into rapid change. New tools come and go fast. Marc Prensky [...] -
rowek wrote a new blog post: Going to extremes with visual literacy: good learning principles and (gulp!) video games 2 years ago
One of the best PD opportunities I have had this year was an audience with Paul Gee, a presenter at the Learning and the Brain Conference held in San Francisco. He challenged his audience of teachers with the notion that education should be a whole lot more like video gaming. This seemed like a pretty radical [...] -
rowek wrote a new blog post: When a picture is NOT worth a thousand words – a challenge to visual literacy 2 years ago
I was a bit deflated to discover that the oft-quoted proverb “A picture is worth a thousand words” is, quite possibly, a good deal more modern than I’d thought. According to both Wikipedia and a Cambridge professor (will that do for an effort at cross-referencing?!), while the phrase is often attributed a Chinese origin, and while the [...] -
