Josee,
Thanks so much for the encouragement! I’s easy to compare what the older grades do to what I do in first grade. You’re right – boys and girls LOVE Kidpix – and it’s the perfect technological tool at […]

Good for you! I’m just finishing up my final course, and I applaud your enthusiasm and willingness to go through the ‘growing pains’ needed to knowledge gains as well as paradigm shifts.
I’ll keep checking in […]

http://www.howtogetridofstuff.com/wp-content/uploads/how-to-get-rid-of-vomiting.jpgNo, really, I’m not joking. Just the thought of our final project sends my stomach into spasms. It wasn’t always this way… […]

<a href="http://www.coetail.asia/pattis/files/2012/02
I love the concept of the flipped classroom. I’m all for it, excited about it, and hope to put it into action someday. But for today, I can’t for the life of me figure out how to do it in a first grade classroom.
Here are…[Read more]

“What? No rules for the computer lab? You’ve got to be joking!”
Those were my words as I spoke to our IT teacher about finding computer lab rules/guidelines for this assignment. Since I have two computers […]

Patti Swanson wrote a new post, Over the Rainbow with Disney, on the site Awed… 1 year, 3 months ago
It’s a fascinating line we walk in a Christian school knowing that the teaching of science in no way denies the existence of God, or vice-versa. In teaching about God’s promise to Noah is Genesis 9:13, “I […]

Patti Swanson wrote a new post, Questions? I’ve Got Answers!, on the site Awed… 1 year, 3 months ago
I have so many questions! I guess part of it is my age. I’ve seen fads, beliefs, passions, trends, etc. come and go many, many times. I was born in the ’50′s, and have the wonderful advantage of seeing […] -
Patti Swanson wrote a new post, Visual Storytelling and Evenings with Disney, on the site Awed… 1 year, 3 months ago
As I was growing up, the end to the weekend was heralded on Sunday evening by “The Wonderful World of Disney.”
Freshly scrubbed and in my pajamas, I would sit cross legged in front of […]

Patti Swanson commented on the post, The Process of Learning, on the site Te(a)ching and Le@rning 1 year, 5 months ago
Megan,
How can we work with teaching merging skills and content learning? Plus, if we’re teaching kids to seek out knowledge, who’s directing what knowledge content they’ll need? I think what we’re reading […]

Half-life of knowledge? Pretty darn scary. As for personal experience no longer being a requisite, I’m with you. Give me the the guy with the most ‘hands-on.’ (Although on the other hand, I can teach in depth about white sharks, but have never personally come in contact with one). I love the fact you brought [...]

Patti Swanson commented on the blog post My Flipped Teaching 1 year, 5 months ago
I really appreciate your ‘flipping’ your bedtime routine around! What a great anecdote to illustrate taking this concept and applying it not only to academics, but everyday life. A good reminder that learning doesn’t only occur in the classroom when, as teachers, we tend to be so focused on the achievement side of things.

Patti Swanson wrote a new blog post: “Legolas, What Do Your Elf-Eyes See?” 1 year, 5 months ago
When I think of looking a long distance – such as into the future, as I’ve been asked to do for this week’s course, my mind goes back to a quote (the title of this blog) from the movie, Lord of the Rings . Apparently, an elves vision is far superior to a humans. And in [...]

Patti Swanson wrote a new blog post: Embedding? Integrating? A Rose by any Other Name… 1 year, 5 months ago
I think that embedding technology into the classroom curriculum is a vital element to a healthy, progressive learning environment. But I also feel the same about integrating all subjects. I just think we need to be careful and to be age appropriate . In reading many blogs, I’m encountering “down with paper and chalk” attitudes (who uses chalk, [...]

I generally don’t enjoy staff meetings. I’m very easily distracted, and am a “get to the point” person. You don’t need to give me all the philosophical reasons the Board has decided to make the decision they did. Just tell me. Don’t dance around the topic. I’m obviously not, and never will be, administration material, [...]

Patti Swanson wrote a new blog post: Slide Show, Anyone? 1 year, 6 months ago
Slide show presentations are really a misnomer. Who really does an actual slide show? Do slides even exist anymore outside of professional photographers? I remember holding up 3×3 slides to the light because it was too much trouble to pull out the projector. Now my projector is attached to the ceiling in my classroom and is [...] -
Patti Swanson wrote a new blog post: I’ve Learned I Have a Lot to Learn 1 year, 6 months ago
I’ve been sick with walking pneumonia and in bed for the last five days. Listening to TED talks, reading tech articles, and trying to figure out how to change the picture on my blog has engaged a large part of my waking hours. Thinking how to articulate what I’ve learned has also been a focus. What have [...] -
Patti Swanson wrote a new blog post: Harris Burdick: encouraging young writers 1 year, 6 months ago
I love a good mystery. And I love to see my students’ eyes light up when they think they have solved what I’ve put before them. That’s why I LOVE the book, The Mystery of Harris Burdick. This book is by the children’s author, Chris Van Allsburg, who is particularly known for Jumangi and Polar Express. In my [...]

Patti Swanson wrote a new blog post: Copyright? Oh, “Big” Brother! 1 year, 11 months ago
I wrestle with the whole idea of copyright. It seems a very antiquated way to police a creative product. In our day and age information is limitless, so why are some things copyrighted with wide access and others are not? Or, why do some things have the Creative Commons copyright, and others are hidden away [...]

Wow! Online privacy is an amazingly diverse topic. I hadn’t realized searching sites for ideas on how better to educate students about the topic could provide such comic relief. Did you know there’s a site stating Google is a dangerous, information stealer emphasized with the fires of hell burning under the Google logo? How about [...]

Thank Goodness for the SFS Coetail Group I’m really not going to keep banging the “I don’t know what the heck I’m doing” drum. Really. But in reading the acronyms RUA and AUP , I hadn’t a clue. So, when our cohort group planned to meet for work on our final project, I just had [...] - Load More
