Digital Footprints I learned the term ‘digital footprint’ little more than a year ago in conversation with teachers at the 2010 EARCOS Teacher’s Conference at ISM in Manila. Most of the conversation seemed to revolve around stories of digital footprints gone bad. Stories of teachers who had lost jobs or been denied jobs because of stuff posted [...] -

Basically, I completely agree
. I think some activities are much better suited toward the direct, tactile environment. On the other hand, sometimes the novelty of doing a task in an online or digital environment can raise the engagement level. Ultimately I think technology should get us to ‘new things in new ways’, but sometimes [...] -

I am reminded of an ongoing online discussion I was involved in wondering where all these supposed ‘digital natives’ we hear about are. I think you’re onto something when you mention the disconnect between student’s digital lives outside of school versus inside of school. Maybe their nativeness doesn’t always translate into school.

I admit I hadn’t been thinking about the schools here in our host country, but I am now. Thanks for the insight.

Faced with the task of creating a UBD style lesson plan for this CoETaIL course, I had some work and reading to do to figure out both UBD and the ISTE net-s standards, which had to be incorporated into the lesson plan. The UBD lesson plan is great because it encourages lessons built around Bloom’s taxonomy [...] -

Hi Grant. I really like the idea of setting up a backchannel chat in class so students can get their questions out there. It means they can ask before they forget and the can ask even if the teacher is busy. It also opens up the possibility that another student might be able to answer [...]

Teaching with Dilemmas I attended another session with John Zola . This time the topic was Using Dilemmas to teach history and critical thinking skills. The idea is to present students with short narrative of an individual forced to make a difficult decision. The Dilemma Here is the dilemma John used for an example: Helga’s Dilemma (from L.…[Read more] -

It will be interesting to see how my students respond. Many of them are seniors who are probably quite accustomed to the status quo. I will do my best to document it!

EARCOS Teacher’s Conference 2011 I had the pleasure of attending a session with Kim Cofino entitled, Making a Lasting Impression. The session focused on how to make good visual presentations using the premises of Presentation Zen and the Creative Commons resources available predominately through flickr. Teachers have been using visuals to…[Read more] -

While I missed the session on QR codes at ETC2011, I talked to a few people who attended and followed some of the twitter traffic. I too had no idea what a QR code was before the conference. After finding out a little more, I have become very interested in the potential of these codes [...]

EARCOS Teacher’s Conference 2011 While I missed Brian Bennett ‘s presentation about his flipped chemistry classroom , I at least had a chance to catch Jeff Utecht’s presentation on ‘finding more time in your classroom’, which covered a number of themes and ideas that fit in with reverse instruction and set me to finding out more. FYI – Jeff [...] -
