A class member brought up a very important point that I believe to be pivotal in our discussion of education and the integration of technology in our “learning landscape.”
Is there a knowledge base that we expect students/citizens to know?
With all the talk of how information is doubling at in increasingly staggering rates, what do want student to know? Google is a click away with information, but what does that imply? I wonder how much time do we want to spend in our classes on “factual knowledge.” On the other hand, do I want a generation of citizens who can only have a conversation with google at their side? I believe this is a topic that we could devote to a future class. Issues like this always come full circle back to balance, but an intellectual discourse may challenge our beliefs and assimilate this burning topic into our philosophies and values.
