When reviewing and revising the TUP, it was important to provide students guidance using language that is functional, understandable and positive. More often than not, TUPs provide students a laundry list of commandments -thou shall not…- from start to finish. The goal of the revision was to keep the language user friendly and clearly state expectations. An additional objective was the “darkening of the gray areas” by removing any ambiguous areas in the TUP. As part of the process, this document was shared with small student groups in class – what better group to judge than those it directly affects. After several discussions and explanations regarding the terminology, it became painfully obvious that a TUP must reflect the environment it’s meant to guide. The final product clearly communicates expectations in a positive manner and reaffirms the values embedded in divisional philosophy.
