Hey Joe,
You might talk to Jesse Meyer about our Poetry Outloud projects. Students recorded work in front of a green screen. We got around the classrooms alignment issue by making the videotape into "a different take on the poetry cafe". Another workaround is to have students do a videotape rehearsal and self-reflect on their speaking skills. Students' "second take" is then done in front of a green screen because the room is more quiet. They'll accidentally be so good that you'll only need 20 minutes to pop the productions into iMovie and add a background :).

That said, the living museum biography project sounds amazing. When students talk in first person from another's perspective, they must first synthesise info from a variety of sources. Great for research and literacy. The one other risk with this project is that students need plenty of notice to get appropriate costumes.

I can have some students from Down Under help give your students feedback. :)

... that students at every age are able to customize their learning experiences based on their own interests and motivations. ... I wish this for them. And even though we are at the moment still bound to certain content, I try to let them make choice and take ownership of their learning. It always motivates them.

Both of these units sound great but I really love the poetry unit idea. What do you think of bringing in "presentation zen" elements to the video/voiceover and have the students use CC images paired with their words?

I can understand your concerns about getting other team members on board. It's a tough spot and I can see both sides of the coin (from the admin point of view). Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Joe, I love some of the routines that you have set up in your classroom! (And I really like the COW Herder term! I wish we had laptop carts just so I could use it!) Are these expectations/routines used throughout your grade level? And are the 3rd/5th grade teachers using similar ones too? If not, I think you should definitely invite some of these others teachers in so they can use your class as a labsite and see the routines in action!

I think the work by Dan Pink is integral in re-imagining the future of schools. For too long the content has been forced upon students. I think we are now finally at a point where it truly is feasible that students at every age are able to customize their learning experiences based on their own interests and motivations. Like you allude to, it will require a new definition of the role of the teacher. I think our involvement in courses like this (and many others) are instrumental in helping shaping that new definition.

Hi,
I can definitely imagine this future of learning called Digital Aristoteles like above in the video. Already now and even more in future we choose our teachers, we choose our time to learn and the content/concepts/skills/literacies etc. In kindergarten / primary school though I don't see it as independent. Additionally students in PS need and craving for face to face relationships to peers and teachers/adults, especially if they don't experience this at home. I just hope that educational institutes will have the courage to rethink and start the revolution. How can we open their eyes, convince them ... or will it happen anyways and like you said technology will do the job?!

Love these ideas of flipping and the idea that you can use this inside your classroom too for groups is perfect. It's a strategy and using it appropriately is what makes it work!

Hi There,

Your school seems to be heading in a good direction with plenty of tech resources which will allow you to head toward the transformation Level. Our school is also in a similar position but like you the biggest hurdle is the curriculum. We have a packed curriculum and many of the tech things are not written into the unit plans. We certainly need to embed it better, so it does not become a separate project that takes up lesson time but rather is part of the lesson.
