Hi Paul,
You're right that commenting on Google docs doesn't always work. Like everything, it needs guidance and explicit teaching. We're still working towards that, but I'm hoping that by pairing up with a class who have been commenting on and using Google docs for longer, my students will have good role models to base their own comments on.

Thanks Stacie,
It's always hard to factor in real collaboration but if you start small and collaborate with classes in your team, it should make it easier.

Good luck!

Cheryl,
I commend you on your collaborative effort! As I sit here and wrestle with some final reflective thoughts on my Coetail journey, I am finding myself greatly lacking in professional collaboration. I am involved daily in getting my students to collaborate and to realize the benefits of working together and sharing ideas, but why do I find myself still in sporadic and one-off collaborative situations? One flaw of my final project is the total lack of collaboration on MY part. Sometimes as I troll the blogs and feeds, I feel so overwhelmed by all the information, creativity, ideas, and suggestions that maybe my way of coping is to pull in and try to process for my own understanding. In any case, this post is truly inspiring and I hope to achieve some collaborative success in the near future.

The challenge for me is really effectively using collaboration for better learning - I think your many examples show that. Sometimes when students are 'collaborating' on Google Docs they're just working on different parts of a document without actually analyzing, evaluating or synthesizing anything together. In some cases in can actually be better to use a tool which doesn't allow multiple users to edit at the same time, as a group really has to discuss and agree on the final product.

Thanks Jeff,

The kids had a great time making these and really did well in weaving together media. We'll keep on working on credits but it's already amazing how often they talk about copyright in other contexts now. It'll be great to see how they transfer their skills to our summative assessment in science for my COETAIL final project.

I agree with you in regards to embedding the information literacy standards must be a team effort. With any set of standards, we need time to really 'unpack' the standards and figure out what they look like in practice and at different grade levels. And a lot of the information literacy standards are not directly connected to tech tools but are related to critical thinking, problem solving and collaboration skills that students need regardless.
