Love the vision!

And now there is no such thing as regular blogging. Look at my blog. One month one blog post the next month 6 blog posts. It is better to be regular and I would blog more if I wasn't over extended (something I'm working on). But take it slow, form the habits, and keep learning.

I find myself blogging more in the summer as COETAIL courses come to an end and I find myself in a more reflective mode. So that is always a good time to form the habits that can carry you through the hectic school year once it hits.

So glad that you have these habits and these goals...that is what COETAIL is meant to be a starting point into a network of learning that honestly is the best professional development you will ever be an active part of. Enjoy the ride!

Great project Christina. I'm also doing a collaborative writing project with my language students (Spanish MS). We all have iPads and Google accounts, so some of your snags won't be a problem. I appreciate your efforts and now I have more to think about when I introduce the project.

Hi Wendy,

Thanks for your thoughts! I definitely hear what you're saying in this comment. Coincidentally, math is an area where handwriting continues to impact scores. In the IB's Middle Years Programme, the Math rubric includes a criterion called Communication. Not only are students scored in this criterion based on the ability to communicate their mathematical understanding, they must show their work clearly and logically. For my son (and all others who are handwriting challenged), it takes painstaking effort to not only write numbers clearly, but to line them up logically in order to work through to a correct answer. For the most part he has figured out the importance of handwriting in Math; however, he does trip himself up in his figures from time to time. Again, I think it's important that students are able to learn and use handwriting and tech skills so that when they do have options they are able to choose which tool will best support their ability to communicate their ideas clearly.

Hi Sanne,
Thanks for you comment!I read your blog post about handwriting and totally agree with the idea that technology shouldn't necessarily replace handwriting, nor should we fight for handwriting over technology. For some reason, people feel the need to approach change and new ideas with an "either or" mentality, when new ideas can enhance our current practices and experiences and offer up other options. I found in your blog post a sentence that resonated with me that captures where I stand on the role of handwriting and technology both as a mother and as an educator, "Typing levels the look of prose to allow expression of ideas, not the rendering of letters, to take center stage." This statement exemplifies exactly why typing is a better option for my son (and many others!). As educators we appreciate scoring assignments that look nice and are presented in creatively appropriate formats. Typing levels the playing field...at least as far as the look of the words are concerned. I imagine this won't be the last time this topic is discussed in our lives as parent and educators. ;)

Thanks, Tara! I would be interested in some recommended reading on Gen Xers vs. Gen Yers (if you know of any). As a Gen Xer, I definitely see myself on the innovation and creativity side of the spectrum. This leads me to assume that the generations that follow me will be just as, if not more!, innovative and creative. However, this is a myth much like the digital natives myth. Younger teachers aren't entering the classroom en masse with incredible 21st century tech skills (neither as consumers, nor as integrationists). It's slightly mind-boggling.
