Thanks for the story. The common sense media lessons are a great place to start. It's a constant conversation that needs to be happening with students at school and at home. This is the world the kids live in and we need to help them learn how to live in it with empathy and respect.

Sidebar is looking good! Love the avatar, map and flag counter. These are motivating widgets as they show you that people are actually looking at and reading your blog if they are not leaving comments (Lurkers...the webs full of them). Continue to reflect on this idea of audience and how powerful it is for you as a writer and then think about your students and how motivated they are when they have an audience. This is why I love having students blog and the first thing we do is put a map on their blog so they can see where people are from that are reading their blog. Audience is a motivating factor for doing work. Whether writing, creating videos, or any project. We do better work when we know we have an audience? Audience matters....so how do we use this to motivate students?

Good question and I appreciate Jeff's reply. When we did our book trailers, I boldly told the kids to use the cover art image. In my heart I was hoping for a "fair use - education - non-commercial" interpretation. We did put in a citation at the end. I will experiment with putting a link into the book trailers.

Great advice Jeff and it makes sense. I will add a slide at the end of my VoiceThread presentation that links the book back to Amazon.com.

Ah...book covers. They are an interesting one. The artwork belongs to the publisher which makes it hard to use. However because the book is sold to the public and they put the book cover online for publicity therefore it's a tricky one.

With book covers I say use them as long as you link to the where someone can buy the book. So instead of linking to the wikipedia page, because the artwork doesn't belong to them, link to the book on Amazon or on Barnes and Noble. Or some other store where when clicked on you the person would get more information about the book and be able to purchase it.

In a voicethread you could create a slide at the end of the presentation that has links to all the books used in the VT itself. Or put it at the bottom of the image.

Great question...that is complicated....at the end of the day the publisher wants to sell books so if you link to somewhere where others can buy the book....they're happy and you stay out of trouble as you are linking to the publisher that owns the artwork.

Hi Jeff, I realized that clicking on the picture creates a small picture on the picture and that allowed me to align and place a caption in the picture. Baby steps...

Now I'm trying to sort out adding widgets. Not sure why you were able to embed and I was not. Will try it again soon.

Hi Jeff, I'm looking for a way to wrap the text around my picture and for a way to put the code on the picture as a caption. I have not seen the two current videos yet, maybe you address these tasks in those videos. Also, I was adding categories when my daughter jumped into my lap and now I have "wee 1" and I cannot figure out how to change the spelling. Are all of your videos in Itunes? I just got my Itouch back with a new glass screen, my daughter dropped it, and so I'm now looking at Itunes to find your videos.

Thanks,
Britt

I think you'll be interested to see where you blog is being read once you get a map widget up on your sidebar. You can watch the video on creative commons license to figure out how to do that.

Great picture...now see if you can get it to wrap around the text and fix the code.....of course after you come back inside from a little fresh air. :)

Thank you for that. I linked the URL. There is supposedly a "W" somewhere on my blog and I cannot find it for the life of me. My friend said you press the W and then cut and paste your Word doc and the text enters nicely. Blogspot is easier to navigate and Weebly.

Even if you don't know how to place the entire file in your blog, it is very helpful if you highlight the link and then click the link button on the menu above the post, where it looks like two chain links. That way people who read your blog won't have to cut and paste the URL into their browser to look at your file.
